====Background of Miao Tribe===============
Buddhism is founded by Sakyamuni Gotama Buddha about 3000 years ago. His first discourse was on the Four Noble Truths about the world we live in. It has propagated from present day Nepal to large parts of Asia. It is now seeing widespread acceptance in Western countries. "It is proper to doubt in things that are doubtful. Do not believe anything through logic. Do not believe anything because it accords with holy scriptures. Do not believe anything through the testimony of some reliable person. Do not believe in anything thinking, "This person is a great preacher". When you yourselves know what is evil, blameworthy and censured by the enlightened wise, abandon those things. When you yourselves know that these things are good, not blameworthy, but praised by the wise, accept and practise them." - Kalama Sutta
The Mala is a tool used by Buddhist practitioners to develop their concentration while chanting mantras or other characters of Buddhist significance. It is an alternative to meditation, most suitable for laypersons who are unable to devote long hours of time for prolonged meditation sessions. Concentration, also known as Samatha (Pali language), is vital to the cultivation of the mind. It is only when the mind is totally quiet that wisdom and insight can arise, just like being able to see a clear reflection on a calm body of water.
There are many explanations for the significance of the number of beads on a mala. All numerations are multiples of 3 (18, 21, 27, 54, 108, 1080, with exception to 14). The root defilements of our mind are Greed, Aversion and Delusion. In the Tibetan Mandala of The Wheel of Life, there are 3 animals at the center, each representing each of the 3 root defilements. In one of the explanations for the 108 numeration in a full length mala, it is said to represent the 108 desires of the mind. By using such a mala, one may hold the aspiration to remove all these desires to experience spiritual liberation. The mentions of the 108 beads mala can be found in the Mahayana doctrines, common in the Chinese language. | |
